My name is Austin Layhew and I was born in São Paolo, Brazil. I was adopted by an American family and brought to this country at the age of 13. God heard my prayer in the orphanage when I asked him to send me a family, and one from the U.S., at that!
Art is my passion and I enjoy creating pieces that reflect my story. That’s why I make handcrafted, wooden American flags. For me, the burning of the wood represents the process of transformation during my personal growth in a new country. It was challenging to say the least. I had to learn English, catch up on an enormous learning gap in school, and adapt to a new way of life.
Over several years, I became a naturalized U.S. citizen and later went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I will never forget how it felt holding the red, white, and blue American flag during my citizenship ceremony surrounded by my amazing family. I can truly say these colors are significant to me and forever a part of my story.
